Out with old, In with new – 5 ways to declutter your mind

We declutter our rooms, our closets or gardens, but what about our minds? Have you stopped to think whether or not you’re holding on to negative emotions?

Decluttering your mind is a necessary and useful process since we have a load of thoughts running through our mind, every day.

Decluttering our minds seems daunting, where do you even begin? It’s not as simple, as decluttering a closet or a room. The human brain is complex. The mind holds a lot of hurts and traumas, and there are so many layers of consciousness.

So how do we declutter our complex mind?

1. Breathe

Breathing.

It’s free and available, yet us humans at times simply forget to breathe. How often do you focus on your breath? It’s a simple tactic and so very effective. All you need to do is to take a few deep breaths, and focusing on your breathing.

If you want something a little more structured, then check these breathing techniques, below.

  1. Sama Vritti or Equal Breathing 

To start, inhale for a count of four, then exhale for a count of four. If you want to take it up a notch, then you can aim for six to eight counts per breath. This technique calms down your nervous system, increases your focus and reduces stress.

You can do this technique whenever, but it’s really effective before bedtime.

2.  Abdominal Breathing Technique 

Start by putting one hand on your chest and the other hand on the belly. Take a deep breath through your nose, make sure your diaphragm inflates with enough air. Take six to ten slow deep breaths per minute for 10 minutes. It’s really useful before any stressful event.

2. Write things down 

Technology has made it easy to keep track of our notes and ideas. However, there is something great about paper and pen. Writing things down keeps your mind from being filled with your to-do list.

3. Identify & Eliminate 

In order to declutter your mind, you need to identify what needs to go. Once you’ve identified what needs to go and what needs to stay, proceed to eliminate.

4.Check your sleeping pattern 

The amount of sleep you get is crucial. If you don’t get enough sleep then its time to do something about it. Some people can get away with a minimal amount of sleep, but either way, you need sleep.

Without sleep, your brain cannot function.

5. Take a walk 

Find your favorite park and take a walk! Okay, it doesn’t have to be a park but it is an ideal place to declutter your mind. Physical exercise does wonders for the mind.
